Puran added that his clients pose no flight risk to the court since they have been reporting to the police regularly,Manchester United t Shirts, and the number one accused, Manniram Persaud was informed while visiting CID headquarters on Monday that he would have been charged.Puran said even after being informed of this he was allowed to go home and still turned up for his court hearing. He added that since the commencement of the investigation, only Manniram was placed on station bail while Peterkin was kept in custody briefly and released. Puran further stated that there is no likelihood of witnesses in the matter being interfered with.It was then time for attorney Nigel Hughes to make his application for his clients, Tennant and Smith.Hughes said that the case is a clear case of severe high level perversity of the course of justice. He then indicated to the court that Tennant was a member of CANU, while Smith was a serving member of the Guyana Police Force. Hughes said that he would get into the facts of the matter since his clients were wrongfully charged.He went on to explain that on the day in question, Tennant, being a CANU rank, was working the baggage scanner when she intercepted a pink suitcase. Hughes said his client pulled off the suitcase and was about to search it when her supervisor instructed her to let the bag go through without a search. Nevertheless, Hughes said, his client proceeded to call the passenger off the flight when once again she was instructed to leave the passenger alone since the owner of the suitcase was a relative of his (Tennant’s supervisor).According to Hughes,Cheap NBA Store, his client then, in an attempt to save herself, made an entry to this effect in a log book. He said it was later discovered that the said pink suitcase was found with 24 kilogrammes of cocaine and one Dorothy Sears was arrested and charge.He went on to state that Tennant has given a statement to this effect to the police while her supervisor also give a statement supporting what Tennant said.Hughes then tendered a document in court which Tennant received from her supervisor instructing her that she should make direct contact with him before searching the luggage of certain persons. He said this letter came shortly after Tennant searched the suitcases of two persons who are closely related to a high ranking law enforcement figure.He said his other client, Smith, was merely a dog handler at the time of the incident but he too found himself being taken advantage of. Hughes explained that sometime back while Smith was on duty, the sniffer dog ran to a suitcase which fell off the scanner and sniffed it but found nothing. Hughes told the court that the suitcase, Smith later found out, belonged to the husband of the same top ranking law enforcement figure. Hughes also highlighted the fact that the main witness in the case is charged in the US and hence it would be almost impossible for the police to prove a case of conspiracy.After listening attentively to the application by both lawyers Magistrate Octive-Hamilton described the facts of the case as being ‘very interesting’. Once bail was granted, the lawyers protested that they want the matter to be tried ‘in a fair and strong court’ and after brief deliberation, the magistrate put down the matter for June 29 in her court room.
